Description / Werner’s T-shirt

You’ll be like a walking rainbow while out and about wearing this lovely cream top that’s trimmed in bright blue around the sleeves and collar.

The front features a table of swatches and vivid descriptions adapted from Patrick Syme’s book Werner’s Nomenclature of Colours. First published in 1814, it was used by artists and naturalists, including Charles Darwin, to represent wildlife in a consistent way before the era of photography.

The ‘Red Lilac Purple’ hue, for example, is like that seen in the ‘Light Spots of the upper Wings of Peacock Butterfly’ or there’s the ‘Aurora Red’, which can be found in the ‘Vent convers of the Pied Wood-Pecker’ or on a ‘Naked Apple’.

The reverse side repeats just these colour swatches in a horizontal panel below the Museum logo.

The t-shirt comes in unisex sizes for adults and is made from 100% organic cotton, farmed in a way that supports soil health, water efficiency and biodiversity.
