Description / The Clever Cuttlefish Wall Print
The Clever Cuttlefish © Oriol Chias Diez (2024). Wildlife Photographer of the Year is owned by the Natural History Museum, London.
11-14 Years, Runner-up
Oriol had been observing the cuttlefish in Mallorca, Spain, for more than an hour and was fascinated by its ability to change colour and shape at will. On one occasion it even disguised its arms as swaying leaves of seagrass.
Cuttlefish are capable of mimicry thanks to around 10 million cells called chromatophores, which they can individually turn on and off, like lights, to create patterns. Their extraordinary camouflage abilities are aided by another set of cells called leucophores, which reflect light.
