Description / Snipe Sentries Wall Print
Snipe Sentries © Agnieszka Florczyk (2024). Wildlife Photographer of the Year is owned by the Natural History Museum, London.
Animal Portraits, Highly Commended
Agnieszka arrived before dawn and manoeuvred her floating hide into position near a group of snipes she had been observing for many days in Barycz Valley Landscape Park, Poland. The birds froze ‘like porcelain figures’ as a white-tailed eagle flew overhead.
Snipes have eyes set high on the sides of their head, allowing them to look up and back, keeping alert for predators without moving. In addition to fish, white-tailed eagles prey on aquatic birds, so the snipes are always vigilant.
