Description / Fern the Diplodocus Replica Skull

If the Museum, and its occupants past and present, hold a special place in your heart, then you'll love this very special gift.

It’s a smaller copy of the head of Fern the bronze Diplodocus that now takes pride of place in our gardens, which opened in July 2024.

Made in polyresin from a 3D scan and hand-painted in bronze and black detail, the replica skull comes presented on a plinth, embossed with the words "Fern the Diplodocus, Natural History Museum London".

Our former resident Diplodocus skeleton, known affectionately Dippy, was on display in Hintze Hall from 1979 to 2017 and returned in 2022 for a temporary exhibition in the Waterhouse Gallery. Dippy is itself a cast of Diplodocus carnegii, the bones of which were discovered in Wyoming, USA, in 1899 and bought by Andrew Carnegie as a centrepiece for his museum in Pittsburgh.
