Werner’s colours of nature

When naturalist Charles Darwin voyaged around the world onboard HMS Beagle (1831–36), he used Werner’s Nomenclature of Colours to describe wildlife specimens. This beautifully illustrated book by Patrick Syme was first published in 1814 and expanded on one from 1774 by German mineralogist Abraham Gottlob Werner, an original copy of which is in our Library and Archives. This range is based on the Syme’s book and the colour charts and vivid descriptions within.
